This is so exciting.
I should introduce myself. My name is Rebecca McKay, I am a co-founder and Director of the Community Music Drop In at Wilfrid Laurier University. I am a student, probably like many of you! I am currently pursuing my Master of Arts in Community Music here at WLU.
WLU is an amazing school, I loved it the moment I stepped on campus. I was really lucky to get into the Bachelor of Music Program and I think that WLU has one of the greatest music programs in the country. The thing was, that if you weren't in music for your degree, it was pretty hard to make music while at university. I also know for a fact that for many university students, music plays a huge role in their lives. Sadly, when they get to university, the music making seems to end.
Listening to music is great, it helps a lot of us study, it helps identify who we are, we find it relatable. But making music is so much more impactful. It is relaxing, contemplative, it forces the mind to work all levels of the brain. It helps us be creative, to think outside of the standard box. It helps us learn to collaborate, to be part of a team, an ensemble. With all this knowledge of the benefits of music in mind, I was so shocked that there weren't a lot of places to make music on campus.
Sure, we can all go take piano, guitar, voice lessons. But those are expensive, they take a lot of time. We're all students, we're stressed, we can't make it every week to a lesson with properly prepared material. That's where the Community Music Drop In comes into play.
The Drop In is a place where you can show up every week, or only show up when you can. Its free. It's also a place where no one will judge you. From new beginner to established veteran, everyone has a place. its a place to vent the stress of the day, to bring joy, and to unleash your creativity. The Drop In will be weekly group music sessions, run by expert music leaders. Each week can be something different: songwriting, drum circles, singing, improvising... you name it. We will provide as many instruments as we can, but we really encourage you to bring yours if you can.
I am so excited.
I can't wait to meet all of you!
